The entity picked by Attwaters Jameson Hill as the firm’s 2018/19 Charity of the Year, with effect from 1 May, is Alzheimer’s Society. Our selected charity will be the worthy beneficiary of various events and other fundraising by our leading regional law firm and its 100-plus partners and staff, based at four offices.
Hatfield coroner’s narrative verdict critical of Lister post-op care
Post-operative care provided to a patient at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage was heavily criticised by the coroner following an inquest hearing at Hatfield in April. The East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust apologised for the serious shortcomings, which had also triggered a General Medical Council investigation into the actions of a senior doctor involved in the case.
Success for Tony Brownlie in the 2018 London Marathon
Tony Brownlie took to the streets of London yesterday, for the hottest London Marathon on record. More than 40,000 runners took part, in temperatures of 24.1C, as reported by the Met Office, with even hotter temperatures for the runners themselves, due to the heat absorbed by the roads and from other competitors.

Sepsis – The hidden killer
Hospitals are missing the symptoms of sepsis and failing to administer antibiotics quickly enough, according to a recent investigation featured in a BBC Panorama programme. Figures obtained by the BBC show that 24 NHS acute hospital trusts failed to give intravenous antibiotics within an hour to half the patients considered to need the treatment for this lifethreatening condition. Sepsis kills around 44,000 people in the UK each year, and causes more deaths than breast cancer, bowel cancer and prostate cancer put together. It occurs when the body’s defences go into overdrive to fight off a major infection.

NHS England is offering a £45m fund to support GP practices to adopt online consultation systems. However, researchers say that evidence from a pilot exercise has shown that the use and effectiveness of online consultation facilities is limited.
